Who Is Amitabh Bachchan?


Amitabh Harivansh Srivastav (Born: Inquilaab Srivastava) aka Amitabh Bachchan is a well-known film actor, producer, television host, playback singer, and former politician who predominantly appears in Hindi films. He is one of the most successful, influential and greatest actors in the Bollywood industry. Amitabh has some nickname: Big B, Munna, Angry Young Man, Shahenshah of Bollywood, Amith, AB Senior, One Man Industry, Superstar of the Millenium, The Last Emperor, Mahanayak, Amit Ji etc.

Bachchan entered in Bollywood in 1969, as a voice narrator in Mrinal Sen’s directional National Award-winning film ‘Bhuvan Shome’. Big B made his acting debut in 1969’s film ‘Saat Hindustani’ and played the Anwar Ali character in that film. He first gained fame in the early 70s for films such as Zanjeer (1973)Deewaar(1975) and Sholay (1975). The actor appeared in more than 200 films including Hindi, South and English films. He has sung many songs as a playback singer and done voice-over work many movies like Lagaan (2001), Ra. One (2011), Kahaani (2012) Krrish 3 (2013), Mahabharat (2013), The Ghazi Attack (2017) etc. He is also well known for his Television show game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri in 1984, the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015 for his contributions to the Hindi Cinema

Early life


Shahenshah was born on 11 October 1942 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. His father Harivansh Rai Srivastava was an Awadhi dialect-Hindi poet and mother Teji Srivastava was a social activist. Harivansh married two times, Shyama (1926–1936) and Teji Srivastava (1941–2003). He has a younger brother, Ajitabh Bachchan.

After the birth of Amitabh, his father named him Inquilaab Srivastava. Later, Harivansh Rai changed the boy’s name to Amitabh. Amitabh’s father had adopted the pen name, Bachchan. That’s why Amitabh used this surname when he entered Bollywood. Later Bachchan has become the surname for all of his family. Bachchan’s father died on 18 January 2003, and his mother on 21 December 2007.

Amitabh finished his schooling from Jnana Prabodhini school, Allahabad. Then, Bachchan admitted to Sherwood College boarding school, Nainital. He later attended Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi and earned a double MA (Master of Arts) degree. Amitabh Bachchan always wanted to join the Indian Air Force.

Debut & Success


Bachchan entered in Bollywood in 1969, as a voice narrator in Mrinal Sen’s directional National Award-winning film ‘Bhuvan Shome’. Big B made his acting debut in 1969’s film ‘Saat Hindustani’ and played the Anwar Ali character in that film. After that, Big B starrer almost 12 films flopped and only two films were hit: Anand (1971) and Bombay to Goa (1972).

In 1973, Bachchan played the role of Inspector Vijay in Zanjeer. That film worked as a turning point film of his career. The early 70s for films such as Zanjeer (1973)Deewaar(1975) and Sholay (1975) gave him popularity.

Retirement & Politics


On 26 July 1982, while filming Coolie, Bachchan suffered a bad injury during the filming of a fight scene. The film was the top-grossing film of that year with a box office success. But after that incident, Amitabh started feeling Muscle Weakness. That illness made him feel weak both mentally and physically and he decided to left acting and venture into politics.

After spending three years in politics from 1984 to 1987, Bachchan returned to films by playing the lead role in ‘Shahenshah (1988)’, which was a box office success. After the success of his comeback film, Amitabh’s maximum movies flopped at the box office.

Critically Fails

In 1996, Amitabh launched a production house name Amitabh Bachchan Corporation (ABCL). He made his debut as a producer with a Telugu film ‘Gulabi (1996)’ and Hindi film ‘Tere Mere Sapne (1996)’. Both films did well at the box office. Gulabi (1996) film was remade in Hindi as ‘Aashiq (2001)’.

Again Big B started failing, his produced films began to flop. ABCL lost millions after sponsoring the 1996 Miss World beauty pageant, Bangalore. Bachchan had to sell his two flats and had mortgaged his bungalow to pay the loan of a bank.

Comeback & Success


After that all ups and down, finally his career graph become stable after the Television game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC)’. In 2000, Bachchan hosted the first season of the reality game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC)’. The show was well received by audiences. Because of Bachchan’s illness, the second season was hosted by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan in 2005. The rest of all seasons are hosted by Big B.

In an interview with Subhash K. Jha, The actor stated he had no work, no money and no one want to cast him. After the hit of the KBC, Amitabh started getting many films offers from makers. KBC helped him to regain his fame and assets back.

After that, he doesn’t have to look back. Films such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001) and Baghban (2003), Aks (2001), Aankhen (2002), Kaante (2002), Khakee (2004) and Dev (2004), Sarkar (2005)Paa (2009) and many more films able to get success at the box office.

The actor appeared in more than 200 films including Hindi, South and English films. He has sung many songs as a playback singer and done voice-over work many movies like Lagaan (2001), Ra. Amitabh married to actress Jaya Bhaduri on 3 June 1973. The couple has two children, a daughter Shweta Bachchan and a son Abhishek Bachchan. Shweta married to legendary actor Raj Kapoor’s grandson and a businessman Nikhil Nanda on 16 February 1997. Actor Abhishek Bachchan married to actress Aishwarya Rai on 20 April 2007 who is two years elder than him.
