Who is Govinda?


Govinda Arun Ahuja aka Govinda is an Indian film actor, comedian, former politician and dancer who is well known for his work in Hindi films. Govinda is one of the talented actors and considered one of the best dancers in the Hindi film industry. The actor has nicknames: Chi Chi, Virar Ka Chokra.

Govinda made his debut with 1986’s romantic-drama film ‘Ilzaam’. Chi Chi has appeared in over 150 Hindi films and his career spanning three decades. The actor was a member of the Parliament of India from 2004 to 2009.

Early Life


Govinda was born on 21 December 1963 to former actor Arun Kumar Ahuja and singer-actress Nirmala Devi. He is the youngest child of six children’s family. Actor-director Kirti Kumar is his elder brother. His elder sister, Kaamini Khanna, is a writer, music director, and singer. Filmmaker Anand Singh is his maternal uncle who is the director-producer of his film ‘Tan-Badan’.

Arun Ahuja earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Annasaheb Vartak College, Vasai, Maharashtra.

Debut & Succes Story


After Govinda received a Bachelor of Commerce degree, his father suggested him to pursue a career in the film industry. In 1986, Govinda made his debut with Shibu Mitra directed romantic-drama film ‘Ilzaam’ in a supporting role. At the same year, he appeared in Esmayeel Shroff directed romantic-drama film
Love 86, co-starring Tanuja, Rohan Kapoor, Neelam, etc. Then he made his debut as a lead in the film ‘Tan-Badan’.

After that, he has done so many films in various genre. The 90th century is the golden edge of Govinda’s career. He starred in several successful films such as Awaargi (1990), Hum (1991), Zulm Ki Hukumat (1992), etc. He gets the actual fame after joining the famous director David Dhawan. The duo gifted us well entertaining and successful films such as Shola Aur Shabnam (1992), Aankhen (1993), Raja Babu (1994), Coolie No. 1 (1995), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Banarasi Babu (1997), Deewana Mastana (1997), Hero No. 1 (1997), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998), Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999) and some more. These films make him the best comedian actor of ’90s. He also earned several awards for these films.

Fall Down & Comeback

In early 2000’s Govinda’s career had fallen down after a series of commercially unsuccessful films. Then he decided to join politics.

In 2006, Govinda made a comeback with the successful comedy film Bhagam Bhag (directed by Priyadarshan), co-starring Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Lara Dutta. Then in 2007, he appeared in director Nikhil Advani’s big-budget drama, Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love. His second release that year was David Dhawan directed comedy film ‘Partner’, co-starring Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Lara Dutta. The film grossed almost ₹138 crore at the box office worldwide.

He was continuing his film career while he was serving as an MP. On 20 January 2008, Govinda decided to leave politics and concentrate on his Bollywood acting career. So that he resigned from politics.

Personal Life


Although, there are rumors that, Govinda was in a relationship with actresses like Neelam Kothari and Rani Mukherji, he secretly married to Sunita on 1 March 1987. Sunita is the sister-in-law of Govinda’s maternal uncle and filmmaker Anand Singh. Together they have two children, a daughter (Tina Ahuja) and a son (Yashvardan Ahuja).

Govinda has a huge family. He has a total of 5 siblings. So that, Govinda’s six nephews and two nieces work in the Hindi entertainment industry: Krishna Abhishek, Aarti Singh, Vinay Anand, Aryan, Arjun Singh, Ragini Khanna, Amit Khanna, and director Janmendra Kumar Ahuja. Govinda’s brother-in-law, Devendra Sharma also has acted in several Hindi films.
