A film will be considered as a hit when the distributor recovers the investments. Suppose a producer invested ₹20 crores to make a film. Then either the producer sells the film to a distributor or shares the profit. Nowadays, the trend is to sell the movie to distributors. Movies with good star cast sold at good price. After that, distributors bought the film right by paying ₹35 crores. And then invest another ₹15 crore on its promotion. So the cost is now ₹50 crores.
